Wildflowers of the Southern Appalachians

How to Photograph and Identify Them

by Kevin Adams and Marty Casstevens

If you're familiar with Kevin Adams' waterfall book, it will be hard to miss this spectacular field guide to wildflowers, published in 1996 by John F. Blair of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The book is roughly the same size and shape as the waterfall book, with a similar format.

Adams and Casstevens did a remarkable job of photographing 250 different varieties of wildflower in a single season. The photographs are, as anyone familiar with Adams' photography would expect, clear and precise, so the book serves as an excellent field guide for identifying wildflowers.

Furthermore, Adams presents tips on photographing each individual flower.

There is also an extensive section in the forwarding material where Adams gives a liberal course in general outdoor photography, including tips on everything from extension tubes for lenses to building barracades against the wind to help keep the flowers still.

And, yes, right there on page 227 is the famous "belle" of the Jocassee Gorges - Shortia Galacifolia, "Oconee Bells."
